Biography note
José Pedro Aguiar-Branco graduated from the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Law and started working at the country’s first legal practice in 1980.
He was Minister of Justice in the XVI Constitutional Government and Minister of National Defense in the XIX and XX Constitutional Governments.
Member of the Portuguese Parliament since 2005 until 2011 and since 2011 until 2019 (X, XI and XIII Legislatures). President of the PSD Parliamentary Group in the XI Legislature.
Between April 2010 and June 2011 he was member of the Superior Council for Internal Security. He was President of the Porto Municipal Assembly between 2005 and 2009.
In the Social Democratic Party (PSD), he chaired the Party Program Review Commission, was Vice-Chairman of the National Political Commission, from April 2008 to March 2010, and was Vice-President of the Francisco Sá Carneiro Institute (1999-2002).
He was Secretary-General of the Porto Unesco Center (1984-1985), Vice-President of the National Association of Young Portuguese Lawyers (1988-1991), member (1992-1995) and President (2002-2004) of the Porto District Council of the Portuguese Bar Association, and member of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, elected by the Portuguese Parliament (2000).
José Pedro Aguiar-Branco has been President of the Portuguese Parliament since 27 March 2024.
